Calamus Root is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used to open orifices, rid phlegm, resolve dampness, brighten eyes and improve hearing.  Calamus root benefits the digestive system, supports joint health, benefits circulation, supports cognitive function, benefits the nervous system, and promotes relaxation.  Calamus Root has stimulating, antibiotic, antispasmodic, and analgesic effects.

Some people chew calamus to remove the smell of tobacco, as a stimulant, to increase their sense of well-being, and as a hallucinogen.

Some people apply the calamus directly to the skin to treat certain skin diseases.

In foods, calamus is used as a spice.

Calamus mostly propagates through its rhizomatous root system, and the roots have traditionally been used in herbal practices. Also called sweet flag, the leaves were once strewn on floors for their pleasant aroma. Calamus root can be used in topical applications, to scent cosmetic products, and in some internal applications under the supervision of a qualified expert.

Calamus is a member of the Araceae family and also goes by the names of Acorus, sweet calamus, sweet flag, and Vacha. Native to Eastern countries, Acorus calamus has since spread to Europe, Japan, and the Northern United States. Walt Whitman wrote 39 poems for calamus in his famous work, “Leaves of Grass”.
